With A Bit Of Luck

Thomas wandered through the Little Girls Department (size 2-6X), his fingertips grazing the soft fabrics of the racks filled with vibrant, childish styles. He had never considered shopping in this section, but today wasn’t about buying---it was about dreaming.

His eyes settled on a peach-colored floral tank dress. It was light and airy, with just the right balance of cute and sweet. He had to resist picking it up, holding it against himself in front of a mirror. Though it didn’t fit him now, he smiled, imagining what it would be like to wear it someday. With a bit of luck, he would be transformed into a little five-year-old girl who would look adorable in it.

He pictured himself in the dress, pairing it with pristine white tights and shiny black Mary Jane shoes. Maybe he’d braid his hair into two neat plaits, the ends tied off with delicate pastel bows. The thought filled him with a giddy sense of hope and determination.

"This time next week," he murmured to himself, his smile widening. "I’ll be able to wear anything I want from here."

Thomas placed the dress back on the rack with care, silently promising himself he’d return for it. This wasn’t just about clothes---it was about a vision of who he wanted to become, and he couldn’t wait to make it a reality.

As they strolled through the bustling department store, Little Thomas beamed with pride, twirling around to make the dress flare. The sleeveless design caught the light beautifully, the blue polka dots dancing against the backdrop of white fabric, while the pink accents added just the right touch of playfulness. He loved how the fabric felt against his skin, light and airy, like a whisper of spring, and he could hardly contain her excitement. To think that just last week he was a grown man, now he looked and dressed and acted like a little girl, no older than four or maybe five.

The woman beside him, who had been a friend of the family for as long as Thomas could remember, was equally thrilled. She smiled widely, her eyes sparkling as she pointed out Thomas to passing shoppers. “Look at how adorable she is! Isn’t that dress the cutest?” she exclaimed, her voice a mix of pride and affection. To anyone who didn’t know better, they would think the two were related, bound by blood and history. Lila knew Thomas' or Tomi as she called him, true appearance. That didn't matter anymore, he looked like a little girl now...and he would stay that way forever.

Thomas loved the attention; it made him feel special. It was worth the price of not being allowed to walk anywhere without 'adult supervision'. His cheeks flushed with joy as heads turned in their direction. “Thank you, Auntie Lila!” he chirped, reveling in the warmth of his friend’s enthusiasm.

As they made their way through the store, Thomas marveled at the colorful displays of toys and clothes. Lila, adept at keeping Thomas engaged, pointed out different items, asking questions and encouraging him to express childish opinions. “What do you think of that dress?” she asked, gesturing toward a bright yellow sundress hanging nearby.

Thomas squinted at it for a moment. “It’s pretty, but I like mine better! It has polka dots!” he declared, twirling once more to showcase his choice. This brought another round of laughs from Lila, who agreed wholeheartedly.

“Polka dots are classic! Just like you, sweetheart,” she said, gently ruffling Thomas's hair. That simple gesture made Thomas feel loved and cherished, solidifying the bond that went beyond mere friendship between Lila and her family.

As they continued their adventure in the store, Thomas felt invincible in his beautiful dress, like a little girl ready to take on the world, all thanks to the support of someone who cared for him deeply. He knew in his heart that whether it was a family member or a good friend, love was what made a family, and Lila was a big part of hers. Maybe Lila would adopt her for real. Then he could stay a little girl forever.
